Theodore of Tarsus

Theodore of Tarsus
(c. 602–90)
   Archbishop.
Theodore was educated in Tarsus and Athens. As a refugee from Muslim invaders, he eventually settled in England and was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury in 669. He did much to improve the organisation of the English Church and he presided over its first important council in Hertford in 673. Later he summoned another council to Hatfield. As a result of his efforts, the city of Canterbury became an important centre of scholarship and the authority of the archiepiscopal see was much reinforced. Nevertheless he had serious differences with wilfrid, Archbishop of York, which were reconciled only a few years before Theodore’s death.
